Fun crafts for kids of all ages

We’re spending more and more time glued to our phones, tablets and TV sets. So it’s more important than ever to spend time together without being distracted by screens. Pretty much all children, no matter how old they are, enjoy crafting and it’s a great activity for the family to do together. Crafting brings you together, gets you laughing and gives you time to talk. And you’ll be making happy memories for life, especially for your children. We hope you’ll find our fun kids’ craft ideas inspiring as parents!

1 Get creative with hobby paint and polystyrene shapes

Characters from polystyrene shapes fun crafts for kids

You can create all kinds of amazing things with different 3D polystyrene shapes, hobby paint, sequins, glitter, shiny card and tulle.

First paint the polystyrene shapes with hobby paint. Then decorate them in various ways, using sequins, cut out shiny card, tulle and glitter.

You can use the shiny card to cut out things like

  • ears, eyes and mouths for characters
  • fabulous fins for fish
  • beautiful wings for butterflies
  • crowns for a royal family

Tulle is great for a fish’s tail, or for hair and bows. Or you could use it to make a lovely skirt. Just let your imagination run riot. In the picture above, we’ve made a cheerful family of trolls.

Our craft kits contain everything your need to make lots of different colourful and imaginative designs.

Our Weaving craft kit contains everything you need to get started:

  • Hard cardboard for the loom
  • Different colours of thick and thin yarn
  • Cotton yarn and gold string for the warp threads
  • Fuse beads
  • Self-adhesive hobby felt

Use the materials in the box to make some cute little owls as your first weaving project. The kit contains everything your child needs to get started quickly and easily.

3 Plaster bandage sculpture

fun crafts for kids plaster bandage sculptures

Sculpting with plaster bandages is another really fun craft for kids.

Use soft aluminium thread to make a model. Then wrap a couple of layers of soft plaster bandages around it.  As long as the bandage is damp, it is easy to mould.

This is the kind of craft activity where you will need to cover your work surface, e.g. with a wipe-clean tablecloth. It can get a bit messy when you are wetting the bandages. You will also be using your hands a lot to shape your sculpture and it can all get a bit sticky.

But it’s worth it for the entertainment value and the result!

4 Making cutlery puppets is a really fun craft for kids

Here’s another fun, creative craft idea. And it’s one that you might not immediately think of as a parent.

Use bamboo cutlery, felt, yarn, Silk Clay and pipe cleaners to make different, funny characters.  They could be puppets, animals or anything that springs to mind.

5 Make your own foam stamps

Making pictures using your own stamped designs is a fun, creative craft for kids.

You can make stamps from all kinds of materials but we’ve chosen to use self-adhesive hobby foam that you can stick to a piece of sturdy card.

Hobby foam is easy to cut and you can cut out practically anything and use it to make a stamp. Dot the stamp with hobby paint and press it onto a picture. Test it out on a piece of paper first. In the picture above, we cut out four different shapes: a car, a sun, a cat and a balloon.

6 Fun crafts for kids! Make models from clay and hobby wire

Another fun craft for kids is making models using hobby wire and clay.

The clay we used is called Silk Clay. It’s great fun for crafting, no matter what age you are. Hobby wire is soft and bendable, which makes it very easy to shape into different designs. You then cover your wire with different colours of Silk Clay.

Silk Clay has lots of advantages. First of all, it doesn’t crumble, secondly it isn’t messy and thirdly it’s really soft and easy to shape. On top of all that, it dries at room temperature. Basically it’s a really good, child-friendly product!

We’ve put together more ideas for things to make from hobby wire and Silk Clay here.

Felt is a classic crafting material for children and it’s really easy to sew. If sewing is a bit too tricky, you can always glue it instead.

You can sew absolutely anything you can think of out of different coloured felt! Soft toys, finger puppets, keyrings or mobile phone covers (if you have a phone, that is).
