Crafts using fuse beads and a pegboard are loads of fun!
Children of all ages love making designs out of fuse beads. You can make so many different things with fuse beads and a pegboard. Everything from really simple patterns to more complicated designs. And for younger children, putting beads on a pegboard is great for developing fine motor skills.
Do you and your kids love fuse beads?
If so, read on. We’ve put together some great ideas for you here! How about fridge magnets, spinning tops, keyrings, dreamcatchers…?
Pegboards, or fuse bead mats, come in all shapes and sizes. We’ve used a round one, a square one and a star-shaped one for our pegboard crafts.
1. Fuse bead fridge magnets
Fridge magnets are fun and easy to make. And they come in really handy for sticking up all the important things you mustn’t forget in the kitchen for everyone to see.
Here are some easy designs for the youngest members of the family.
2. Fun spinning tops using fuse beads
Here we used a round pegboard and made spinning tops with different patterns.
You will need:
- Fuse beads
- A pegboard (we used a round one)
- Toothpicks with a sharp tip
Instructions:
- First make a pattern on the pegboard using your fuse beads. Eight rings from the centre is a good size.
- Then place a sheet of greaseproof paper on top of the beads and iron carefully until the beads melt together. Don’t put too much heat on the centre bead! It needs to have a hole in the middle for the toothpick.
- Finally, push a toothpick into the centre bead.
- And spin your spinning top round and round. Note: you need a toothpick with a sharp tip or your top won’t spin.
Make several spinning tops and have a competition with brothers and sisters or friends to see who can keep theirs spinning the longest.
3. Use fuse beads to make keyrings
Make a fun design using fuse beads and attach them to a ring to keep your keys safe. You could make a keyring as a fun decoration to hang on your schoolbag.
4. Fuse bead crafts – Cupcakes
Colourful, imaginative cupcakes are another great idea using fuse beads and a pegboard.
5. Make fabulous necklaces and bracelets using fuse beads
Here’s an example of a cute flower bracelet to make. Besides the fuse beads, you will also need a little chain with a catch and small metal rings so you can attach your fuse bead charms to the chain.
A bracelet and a necklace look great when you’re going to a party!
6. Make your own coasters
These coasters are made using a round pegboard like the spinning tops above.
Instead of using them as coasters, you could make “lids” for a glass. Or why not both? Coaster and lid.
A lid on your glass protects your drink from unwelcome guests. Especially wasps that crowd round juice and other sweet drinks in the summer.
Make the lid the same way as the coaster but leave out the centre bead. This leaves a hole for your straw!
7. Pegboard crafts – flower frames
Another idea for things to make from fuse beads is little photo frames. You could frame pictures of yourself, your family or your best friends.
- First make a frame out of fuse beads.
- Then make some little flowers and glue them to your frame.
- Cut a piece of card slightly smaller than the frame.
- Attach a photo/picture to the piece of card.
- Then glue the card to the back of the frame with the picture facing outwards.
- You could add a triangle of card and glue it onto the back if you want your frame to stand up.
- Or attach some string to the back so you can hang your frame up on a wall.
8. Make classic Disney characters from fuse beads
Here we’ve made Donald and Daisy Duck and Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
9. Winnie the Pooh and his friends
Winnie the Pooh is a firm children’s favourite. Here he is with some of his friends. Tigger, Eeyore and last but not least, Piglet.
The Winnie the Pooh books gave us some excellent quotes. Here’s one of them.
“In that enchanted place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his bear will always be playing”
– A. A. Milne
10. Fun crafts with a pegboard and fuse beads!
Dreamcatcher
Another example of crafts using fuse beads and a pegboard is making a beautiful dreamcatcher to hang on the wall above your bed.
All the material for making one or a pair of dreamcatchers is provided in one of our popular craft kits that you get if you are a member of Club Creo.
Besides dreamcatchers, you can also make other things with fuse beads using the two different pegboards in the kit.
And to finish off, here’s some advice on the best way of heating your fuse bead designs.
Take a piece of greaseproof paper and fold it in half. Place the pegboard on one half
Then fold the other half over the top, covering the beads.
Iron the design, on a fairly warm setting, until the beads have melted and fused.
Lift the paper from time to time to check it’s all looking good.
Then remove your design from the pegboard and turn it over.
Place greaseproof paper over the top again.
Quickly run the iron over the beads from this side.
Don’t let the beads melt together too much this time.
Finally, we’d just like to say that fuse beads are loads of fun – for kids and adults alike. Once you’ve started you’ll find you can’t stop. If you haven’t tried it before, it’s well worth giving it a go.
